About Temple Beth Shalom
Temple Beth Shalom is a culturally diverse congregation that has served the religious and cultural needs of Jews in the South Bay area since 1958. Our community, our worship and our programming reflects our special mix of congregants: Ashkenazic and Sephardic, those whose grandparents came from Europe and those whose families are from south of the border. You'll find Jews by birth and Jews by choice, families with young children and singles of all ages, newcomers and those who have been members for decades.
We are small enough that you will not get lost in the crowd, but large enough to provide a full array of spiritual, educational, cultural, and social activities for all age groups. We pride ourselves on our reputation for providing a warm welcome to all, and for being a good neighbor to people of all faiths in the community. This summer, the synagogue is undergoing several major renovations – both physical, intellectual, and most importantly – spiritually as well.
Our rabbi, Dr. Michael Leo Samuel, provides spiritual leadership for our progressive congregation, which is affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. He brings Shabbat and holiday services to life with engaging music and invigorating Torah study. Rabbi Samuel also has a passion for education, teaching a class for adults almost every day of the week, and personally tutoring all bar and bat mitzvah students. He has a special interest in working with those who want to explore their Jewish roots or ancestry.
Walk through the doors on any Shabbat and we guarantee that you will not leave as a stranger -- especially if you stay for the Cafe Shabbat experience after the Friday night service and the delicious vegetarian lunch served after our Saturday morning service. Come to the monthly "Chula Vista Yeshiva" for spirited discussions of issues in contemporary Jewish life. Check out our class schedule to see what's going on this week whether it's improving our Hebrew language skills, delving into the Tanakh and Talmud or joining other Spanish-speaking congregants in Torah study on Saturday afternoon.
To receive the monthly newsletter and other announcements electronically, connect with Temple Beth Shalom on our contact page.
